The NBA and NFL Drafts are full of improper expectations. I'm trying to fix that.
Each year the NBA and NFL Drafts grow in popularity as do the sites that give prospect rankings, scouting reports and mock drafts.
I think this is a flawed way to look at the Drafts. I think Mock Drafts are incredibly over rated and not terribly useful. Drafts are not about acquiring talent. They are not about getting the best value. Drafts are the work space of the General Manager. The General Manager has to acquire production. The Coaching Staff has to then turn that production into wins.
I believe that these are two different skill sets and two different jobs. I believe that this is the core of the problems with the expectations of drafts.
My goal is to use data and history to set proper expectations for what the Draft is and should be for fans.
I look at "Original Teams" and draft history to come up with realistic expectations for what the Draft will produce.
